Two days to visit Saint-Lô and its surroundings
Capital of the Manche and of the horse, Saint-Lô is renowned for its ramparts and its national stud farm. Have you treated yourself to a weekend getaway? No worries: a short guided tour so as not to miss the must-sees of the Cotentin town and its surroundings.
A must-see is the ramparts (listed as Historic Monuments), remains of the old fortified castle whose fortifications are probably the work of Charlemagne.
More than 30 metres high, the aptly named Tour des beaux regards and its machicolations offer a panoramic view of Saint-Lô, Vire and the other neighbouring towns.
After eating at the Brasserie Luno of the Lunotel hotel restaurant in Saint-Lô, head to the town's national stud farm, which was founded under Napoleon. Whether you are a horse lover or not, you will not remain indifferent to its architecture and its green setting.
You can visit the stables, attend equestrian demonstrations (more than 150 events are organized each year) and discover the history of the horse in Normandy.
Curious to know more about the history of the city? Relive the reconstruction of Saint-Lô at the museum, almost entirely destroyed by the bombings of June 1944.
Set off to explore the Vire Valley and its hilly countryside. There are many routes and as you walk, you will see castles, manors, religious buildings, etc.
Don't miss the Avenel boards site and its sometimes steep slopes, a small natural paradise in the heart of the Vire Gorges.
End your stay with a visit to Les Roches de Ham, one of the jewels of the Normandy countryside, a stone's throw from the Lunotel hotel restaurant. The schist cliff that peaks at 105 meters offers a pretty incredible view of the Vire valley.
It's also the ideal place to try kayaking, paddle boarding or climbing!
