The history of Mont Saint-Michel
Mont Saint-Michel is one of the best known historical monuments in France and a world famous destination.
Built on a rocky island, the site was first a place of pilgrimage; then a fortress, and then a state prison. After the prison was closed in the middle of the 19th century, tourists started to visit Mont Saint-Michel.
Today, the site is visited by millions of tourists from all over the world.
Highlights of the Mont Saint-Michel you should not skip
- Tour of the bay
Access Mont Saint-Michel the same way pilgrims crossing the bay would have done. But do not do this without a guide! The bay can be dangerous if you are unfamiliar with it, with quick sands, tides and other risks.
To safely cross the bay, make use of the guides accredited by the Manche Prefecture who will take you to Mont Saint-Michel on foot. This is a truly awesome experience!

- Tour of the village
Travel back in time as you walk along the main street of Mont Saint-Michel: the Grande Rue. Walk through the three main gateways and then start your ascent of the Mont Saint-Michel among the period buildings. On your way, you will see lots of restaurants and souvenir shops to immortalise your day.
- Tour of the abbey
The abbey was built at the top of the Mont Saint-Michel and this architectural treasure is 1,300 years old. Built on several levels, it has several areas dedicated to a religious life, daily life and the welcoming of pilgrims.

Where to park and how to get to Mont Saint-Michel
You are not allowed to access Mont Saint-Michel by car.
There are many pay and display car parks for the many visiting cars 2.5 km from Mont Saint-Michel: car parks P5, P6, P7bis, P10, P11, P12 and P13.
Free shuttles will then take you to Mont Saint-Michel in no time at all. These operate from 8.30 am to 10.00 pm all year round.
